Abstract

Background: Nature and its universal laws create ethics, life and survival in the real world. The situation in the virtual world might be different.

Aims: To describe an event of ethics in the real world of an open access journal and to analyze its components and influence in the neighboring virtual community.

Event: A scientific article was submitted for publication to the open access journal (OAJ) www.diagnosticpathology.eu  It was accepted after thorough review and language corrections and published after a short time. The authors withdraw the article a few days after publication and claimed that the experimental data were incorrect. A few days later an identical article was submitted to the OAJ www.diagnosticpathology.org for publication and displayed ‘under review’.

Interpretation: OAJs might be considered the entrance to a new environment called virtual universe. They do no longer belong to the physical ‘real’ nature because they ‘live’ in an electronic network which provides an environment might different from the real nature. Examples are reversibility of time, two dimensional structures only as well as different sources of energy and information transfer.

Consecutives: Ethics and associated behavior of ‘living’ elements (events) in a virtual universe should not be judged by conventional parameters of the ‘real world’. They require their own regulations and interpretation.
